How to get to Cape Trib

car hire cairns to cape tribulation

Your choices of transport are a hire car or a bus.

It is highly recommended to rent a car in Cairns or Port Douglas so you have the freedom to explore all the attractions along the way at your own leisure, and you will find that a budget hire car will work out quite economical compared to the bus fares.

On your way up to Cape Tribulation there is the Daintree river to cross, this old fashioned cable ferry runs from 6 AM till midnight.

You can see some driving directions and maps of Cape Tribulation here and also some more info on Cairns to Cape Tribulation car hire

DO WE NEED A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE ?

Only if you wish to go further north up the Bloomfield Track, the road to Cape Tribulation has been sealed all the way since 2002, and recently completed bridges mean that even in the wet season you will not be "flooded in".

THE DAINTREE RIVER FERRY?

The ferry runs back and forth continuously from six in the morning until midnight, a return trip costs $23.- for a car, and multi-trip pass is available too for about $46.-

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DRIVE UP THERE?

From Cairns or the airport about 2.5 hours.
From Port Douglas about 1.5 hours.
From Mossman about 1.25 hours.
These are driving only times, you'll find that when you explore attractions along the way such as boardwalks and beaches that you can easily take a whole day for it.

THE BUS ?

Sunpalm Coaches runs two bus services from Cairns to Cape Tribulation and vice versa each day.
Country Road Coaches runs a service from Cairns to Cooktown that stops in Cape Tribulation every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The return trip to get you back to Cairns runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
These two offer a door to door service.
There are also the buses that do package deals to the backpacker resorts, they throw in a few quick stops and river tour along the way, but often refuse to take you to Rainforest Hideaway like the others do.
Schedules of these services change from time to time, see link here for more info on Cairns to Cape Tribulation bus services.
